On April 1, 2020, the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) launched the US Government ORCID Consortium, bringing together DOE-affiliated and other US government organizations looking to use, adopt, and integrate with ORCID.  Initial consortium members are OSTI, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility, the Advanced Photon Source, and the Center for Nanoscale Materials.  This consortium was created to develop a community of practice to share best practices, facilitate integrations, and identify and resolve issues, while decreasing costs and streamlining administrative processes and technical support.

As the Consortium Lead, OSTI will serve as a bridge with ORCID and facilitate the onboarding of new consortium members.  OSTI will keep the DOE community informed about ORCID developments related to infrastructure, news from other members and consortia, and projects outside the consortium that members may be interested to learn about.  Any DOE-affiliated organization - laboratories, user facilities, program offices - are welcome to join the consortium at any time.

ORCID is a global, community-led organization providing digital identifiers (ORCID iDs) to researchers for the benefit of being uniquely identified and reliably connected with their professional information (affiliations, awards, publications, and more).  ORCID iDs are an effective solution for author disambiguation and improving authors' potential for recognition and discoverability of their research.  OSTI was an early adopter of ORCID functionality into its information tools and services for providing access to DOE R&D results.
