Facilities
The ASCR Facilities Division supports the conception, construction, and operation of world-leading high performance computing, networking, and data infrastructure and related activities for the DOE science mission and the U.S. research enterprise. ASCR’s scientific user facilities comprise an integrated ecosystem purpose-built for the largest scale computing and data research challenges in support of the DOE mission and national research priorities.
Delivering operational excellence. Many thousands of researchers from academia, industry, and federal laboratories use our unique high performance computing resources each year, and hundreds of institutions and tens of thousands of researchers rely on our high performance network resources every day to accomplish their research goals. The dedicated professional staff of the ASCR Facilities provide outreach, training, user support, and operations management daily to bring user projects to life and to maximize mission impact.
Conceiving and building transformational infrastructure. The ASCR Facilities engage researchers to understand their goals, translating their requirements into designs for next generation infrastructure. The dedicated professional staff of the ASCR Facilities partner with users, U.S. technology vendors, and ASCR Research colleagues to co-create transformational advances in high performance computing, high performance networking, scientific software, and data stewardship through major upgrade projects and other activities.
The Facilities Division portfolio supports:
- Operations and upgrade projects for four world-leading scientific user facilities:
- The Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF) at Argonne National Laboratory
- The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory;
- The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; and
- The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) operated by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
- The High Performance Data Facility (HPDF) project, led by Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in partnership with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, to create a new scientific user facility delivering state-of-the-art data management infrastructure, capabilities, and tools.
- The DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, a strategic effort to integrate the wider DOE research infrastructure, empowering research teams to seamlessly and securely meld DOE’s world-class data resources, research tools, and user facilities in novel ways to radically accelerate discovery.
